About Olympic Weight Lifting
Olympic Weight Lifting is one of the oldest competitive sports still practiced today. Tracing its origins back to ancient Greece and China. In the United Kingdom, Weightlifting was an organised sport from around the 1850's onwards. This was under the banner of the Amateur Gymnastic Association, Amateur Athletic Association and the Wrestling Society. The British Amateur Weightlifting Association was formed in 1910 to bring all forms of weight bearing movement together.
Olympic Weight Lifting was one of the seven sports that made up the programme of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, 1896.
Weight Lifting for men has featured at every edition of the Olympic Games in the modern era, with women’s events introduced at the Sydney Games in 2000.

Great Britain has been a dominant force throughout the history of the Commonwealth Games with the third highest medal total in Weight Lifting. Manchesters Commonwealth Games having been the largest medal tally the England Team has ever received. Great Britain Weight Lifters have won 7 medals at Olympic Games from 1896 to 1984.
Olympic Weight Lifting is a bodyweight sport with athletes competing against others in the same category. The athlete who lifts the highest combined weight after the Snatch and Clean & Jerk is the winner. As of 1998 Men compete in 8 bodyweight categories from <56kg – 105+kg, women compete in 8 categories from <48kg – 94+kg.

About the Coach
Andreas Michaelas has been in the sporting world since 1991 and Olympic Weightlifting since 1999. His experience includes having won numerous British records and titles, from Youth to Senior level. He competed for England and Great Britain, won numerous internationals, including three medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2004, and was also used as the technical model for weightlifting in the Official Video Game for the Beijing 2008 Olympics Game.
Testimonies
Andreas worked for the National Governing Body of Weight Lifting, British Weight Lifting, as the Development Manager (North) between 2014 - 2018 and is now the Club Development Manager (England) for British Wrestling. He has also coached on numerous international level teams including the World Cup Team for England Lacrosse u19s Mens and the Commonwealth Games Wrestling Team. Having worked with a variety of leisure centres and gyms which have gone on to win national awards such as Life Leisures Houldsworth Village, which won the UKActive and National Fitness Awards for their respective categories.
